You just know they're going to want that one last night back. Let's hope they don't want the one today back either.
Who will have to be the savior? Well, take a look at the starting mound and it's going to be... Freddy Garcia. Look, I don't care if Garcia fires off five straight no-hitters. There will never be a time where I look at his name as the starting pitcher and think, "Man, I'm really glad he's starting today."
The good news is that the Padres starter is Jason Marquis, who is another pitcher I could never feel good about starting if he played for my favorite team. Marquis is a guy who has a 3.48 ERA despite walking nearly a batter every other inning (won't be a problem against the Orioles, of course) and giving up six home runs in 44 innings. That's probably helped by a .223 BABIP, which is probably helped by a ground-ball rate of 55.6%. It's fortunate for Marquis, because one of every six fly balls hit against him has been a home run.
As I was tempted to do with Cashner last night, you might think that all of his success is a product of Petco Park, but it turns out that Marquis has a 4.15 ERA at home and 1.98 on the road. One of those road starts was in Colorado! And this is Jason Marquis! Baseball doesn't make any sense sometimes. Then again, that's why we love it.
Twitter tells me that it's field trip day at Camden Yards. I never got to go on a field trip to Camden Yards. That would have been cool. Although the kids never get to seem to stay through to the end of the game, which is a little unfortunate, but then again, they don't have to be in school today, so I'd say it works out.
Speaking of Twitter facts, Roch Kubatko relays this one from STATS Inc: Manny Machado (.355) and Adam Jones (.345) are 2nd and 3rd in batting average as RHB vs. RHP. Miguel Cabrera is in first with a .376. That guy is pretty good. Machado and Jones are also pretty good. Marquis is right-handed. Have yourselves a day, fellas. All of you can go ahead and have yourselves a day.
