Louisville (Reds) 2, Norfolk 1
The Tides' once formidable offense has hit quite a rough patch of late. Averaging just 2.9 runs per game over their last 8 games, the Tides were shut down again tonight. They managed to muster 8 hits and 3 walks over the course of the first 6 innings, but were only able to plate one of those base runners. Grounding into 3 double plays will certainly snuff out a number of potential rallies. The bright spot: (RF) L.J. Hoes went 1-3, w/ 1 BB and the Tides' lone RBI. (LF) Xavier Avery went 1-4, with the club's only extra base hit of the night, a 2B. (1B) Russ Canzler went 2-3, w/ a BB. On the pitching side, it was a bullpen game for the Tides. (LHP) Mike Belfiore had a stand-out night, going 2.2 IP and K'ing 6 while walking none and allowing just 3 hits, 2 singles and 1 double. He did allow 2 SBs though, one to Reds prospect Billy Hamilton, who was already on 1st base when Belfiore was summoned from the 'pen.
Bowie 3, Binghamton (Mets) 7
(LHP) Jake Petit didn't have it tonight, yielding 9 H (2 HR) and 5 BBs over 3.1 IP which lead to 6 ERs. He was relieved by (RHP) Tim Bascom, who after his 2.2 IP of 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, and 3 K effort stands just 1 IP away from Bowie's all-time record of IPs. Not exactly a record one wants to celebrate too vociferously, but hey, he's a pro ballplayer. Good for him. (3B) Ty Kelly did Ty Kelly things. To wit, going 2-2, w/ 2 BBs and 1 Run on the night. Though he was Caught Stealing for the 2nd time in 6 attempts this season.( C ) Caleb Joseph went 2-4, w/ an RBI 2B. (RF) Henry Urrutia did not play for the 2nd consecutive night. What's up with that, Melewski?
Potomac (Nats) 10, Frederick 9 (10 Innings)
(RHP) Zach Davies started and was quite good again. 6 IP, 6 H (1 HR, a solo shot), 3 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 7 Ks, and 1 HBP. 98 pitches thrown, with 60 strikes and an 8:4 GO: FO ratio. He (along w/ the catcher) did allow 3 SBs though. Since May 13th the 2011 26th round selection has pitched to the tune of a 2.63 ERA, allowing 12 ER in 41.0 IP over 7 Starts. He has K'd 36 and BB'd 11. Just another in a number of arms in the lower levels of the minors who could be making some noise on O's prospects lists next year. I've yet to catch seeing him in person thus far. But hopefully he'll be among the starters the next time Frederick comes up to Wilmington July 9th-11th.
Last year's 7th Round selection, (RHP) Matt Price, hasn't particularly thrived since his promotion to the High-A level. He came in to start the 10th in a 6-6 game. And while he may have struck out 3 batters in his 1 inning of work he left to a 10-6 deficit. 3 H, 2 BBs (1 IBB), 2 SBs allowed, and 1 WP resulted in 4 runs for the Nats. He's now sporting a shiny 13.50 ERA over 4 appearances with the Keys.
Offensively, the Keys pounded out 20 hits, including 6 Doubles! (2B) Jerome Pena had himself a day, going 5-6, w/ a 2B, 3 Runs, and 1 RBI. (3B) Nick Delmonico went 2-6, w/ a 2B and 1 Run. However, he did K thrice, and committed his 11th Error (fielding). Christian Walker only managed 1 hit over 5 ABs, but it was a big one, a 3 run HR, his 4th w/ the Keys and 7th overall this season. ( C ) Michael Ohlman may have gone 3-5, w/ a 2B and a BB at the plate, but he allowed 5 SBs in 5 attempts on the night. oof. He did pick a runner off 3rd though, so that's cool. (RF) Brenden Webb did Brenden Webb things, going 1-4, w/ a 2B and 2 BBs, but striking out 3 times.
Delmarva 0, Hickory (Rangers) 12
Holy cow. I've been tellin' y'all about how this Hickory squad just straight mashes the ball like taters. Well, they did that tonight. 21 Hits, including 7 for extra bases (3 doubles, 4 home runs) led to a dozen runs. (LHP) Lex Rutledge made his 2nd straight Start, and was not bad. Only 2 IP, and 5 H (1 HR, a solo shot) and 3 ER allowed, along with 2 WPs. But the 6 Ks and 0 BBs are pretty swell. (RHP) Matt Hobgood got torched. 2 IP, 9 H (1 HR, a solo shot), 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, and 1 WP. His last 14 innings over 6 appearances have been brutal: an 11.57 ERA, 27 Hits (2 HRs) allowed, with 9 Ks to 9 BBs. Don't know what happened, but he was statistically dominating over the first month and a half of the season. He is still getting a lot of grounders, so that's encouraging. And maybe he's just going through a tremendous bad spell of BABIP with porous defense behind him. But, man...clean your ish up, Hobgoblin!
There's really nothing that particularly interests me offensively for the Shorebirds. (SS) Adrian Marin went 1-4. (RF) Roderick Bernadina went 0-3. That's about it. blah.
DSL Nats 3, DSL O's2 4
(CF) Daniel Franco went 2-4, w/ a run. 18 y/o RHP Cesar Medina (he turns 19 on Sunday. Happy Birthday, Cesar!) pitched 5 innings, allowing but 1 hit (a solo HR) while K'ing 6 and putting up a 7:2 GO:FO ratio. Nifty.
