Chris Davis: I have not used steroids

Chris Davis told reporters on Thursday straight up that he has never used steroids. Dan Connolly reported it on BaltimoreSun.com because people are forcing it to be news.

We've all seen the articles, the tweets, and even had the discussion in the comments section on this very site: is it possible that Chris Davis uses performance enhancing drugs? I haven't wanted to address it in an official capacity because 1) I think the outrage over steroid use is exhausting, and 2) I don't think that Chris Davis should have to answer questions about steroids based on baseball's recent past and the fact that he has muscles. But unfortunately hack "journalists" and baseball fans won't let it go, and as such Davis decided to go on the record.

Here are some of Davis's quotes from Dan Connolly's article:

I think it sucks that guys in our day and age have to answer for mistakes that guys have made in the past. But it is part of it. That’s what happened when Major League Baseball started addressing the issue. We knew we were going to have to deal with it.

And here is the one that I like the most, because it is the one that is pretty obvious for people who have paid attention to Davis's career or who have gone back and looked at his history because he is so awesome:

I have never taken them. I have no reason to. I’ve always been a power hitter. With me, I think the biggest thing was the consistency of the contact. When I was making contact, I was always hitting for power.

It's worth noting that with all of the Biogenesis stuff going on, Davis's name has never, ever been linked to anything shady. He has passed every drug test that he has ever taken. Last year was the first year Davis had been given regular, every day playing time. And he was good last year, too. He hit for a lot of power, and he's continuing to do so.

I think it's a shame that people can't just enjoy the game without thinking that every muscle-y guy they encounter must be on the juice. I can almost understand it with fans because they were burned before and if they're fans of other teams, let's face it, a lot of them are jealous. Plus to them Davis came out of nowhere. But for the so-called sports writers who have taken it upon themselves to call Davis out (I won't link them here, but you can find them), shame on them.
