Norfolk Tides 6, Charlotte Knights 3
The Tides were losing 3-2 going into the eighth inning when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs to take the lead. In the go-ahead inning, Zelous Wheeler homered and L.J. Hoes doubled.
Tsuyoshi Wada started for the Tides in what seems like a never ending quest to make it back to the majors. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. After Wada left the game, the Knights didn't have another base runner. Chris Jones came in for 1 2/3 innings and Adam Russell pitched the ninth. They were both perfect with two strikeouts.
The big offensive performance of the night was by Wheeler, who had a double and two homers in the game. Jason Pridie had a single and a homer, while Hoes had a single, a double, and a walk.
Bowie Baysox 10, Richmond Flying Squirrels 2 (Game 1)
Does Bowie play a double header every Friday? That's how it feels to me. In game one they pummeled the Squirrels with 10 runs on 14 hits and 9 walks in just seven innings.
Caleb Joseph and Trayvon Robinson each had three hits for the Baysox, one of which was a double for Robinson. Robinson also had two walks. Christian Walker was 0-for-3 but had two walks. Brandon Waring had two hits and Seth Loman had a single, a home run, and a walk.
Tyler Wilson pitched all seven innings for the Baysox and gave up 2 runs on 8 hits. He struck out six and didn't walk any.
Bowie Baysox 3, Richmond Flying Squirrels 4 (Game 2)
The Baysox were tired after game one and only scored three runs in game two.
Trent Howard made his Bowie Baysox debut and was fantastic through the first four innings. He faced just 12 batters as the only baserunner came on a walk and was wiped out on a double play. But in the fifth it all fell apart for Howard. He allowed four straight singles to start the inning and was pulled with one run in and the bases loaded. Zech Zinicola came in to replace him and allowed all three inherited runners to score thanks to a ground out, a single, and a sacrifice fly.
The Baysox offense scored three solo runs, one each in the second, third, and seventh innings. They had just four hits on the night: a single and a double by Joseph, a home run from Waring, and a single by Kyle Hudson.
Frederick Keys 9, Salem Red Sox 8 (10)
The Keys won in walk-off style last night thanks to an RBI single by Jerome Pena in the bottom of the 10th inning. It was a wild one in Frederick as the two teams combined for 17 runs, 25 hits, 10 walks, and 3 errors.
Zach Clark started for the Keys and gave up four runs in the first inning, then pitched two scoreless before giving up two in the fourth. He ended his day with a line of 4 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5(!) BB, 1 K. He was followed by Miguel Chalas who also had a bad night, giving up 2 runs in 2 2/3 innings.
On offense, the 1-2 hitters Glynn Davis and Jerome Pena had three hits each and Pena also walked twice. Nicky Delmonico and Michael Ohlman had one hit each, catcher Allan de san Miguel hit a home run.
Delmarva Shorebirds 4, Kannapolis Intimidators 3
The Shorebirds took a 1-0 lead into the top of the 8th when the Intimidators (seriously?) scored three to take the lead. But the Birds came right back with three in the bottom of the inning and held on to win.
Matt Taylor pitched into the 8th inning for the Shorebirds. He allowed nine hits on the night, four of which came in the eighth inning. His complete line was 7 2/3 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Sander Beck came in with two outs in the eighth and got a strike out to end the inning. He pitched the ninth inning and was awarded the win.
Lucas Herbst had two hits on the day, as did Adrian Marin. Marin and Nik Balog each doubled in the game.
Aberdeen IronBirds 1, Vermont Lake Monsters 5
Now, Lake Monsters is a name I can get behind! Not like Intimidators.
The IronBirds were held to just two hits in this game, and the only reason they got a run was because one of them was a home run by Scott Kalush. The other was a single by Trey Mancini. Conner Bierfeldt and Mike Yastrzemski each walked.
Two awesomely named IronBirds pitched in the game. Sebastian Vader started and went six innings. He had one inning with major troubles and five that weren't so bad. In the second he loaded the bases with one out on an error (not by him, by Jared Breem), a hit by pitch, and a walk. He induced a ground ball to first baseman Mancini, who threw home to get the second out. Unfortunately a triple then cleared the bases and then the triple hitter, Jaycob Brugman, scored on a throwing error. Oof. Vader's final line was 6 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
Augey Bill pitched the final two innings, giving up two singles.
