Series Preview: O's vs. Rockies (16 - 18 August)

Thanks to bullpen struggles, the O's dropped all three games to Arizona in walk-off fashion. They'll hope to recover at home in a series against the Colorado Rockies. Chen, Norris, and Feldman for the O's. Nicasio, Bettis, and Chacin for the Rockies.

The O's could use a return to handshakes at the end of games.

In his second full MLB season, Chen will make his first career start against the Colorado Rockies.  Interleague series have been a tale of two Chen's.  He's been solid against a few of the NL teams (Atlanta, LA), but hit hard against others (Washington, Pittsburgh).  His overall numbers include an OPS of .757 (OBP of .340), but he's limited opponents to a .305 OBP inside of Camden Yards, so that's promising.

Like Chen, Nicasio will make his first start against the Orioles.  He's posted similar numbers during interleague series (.336 OBP, .793 OPS).  Surprisingly, he's got much better numbers (.710 OPS vs. .893 OPS) at Coors Field than he does on the road.  Fun fact:  Bud Norris has doubled against Nicasio in two tries.

Bud Norris has struggled in four attempts against the Rockies.  Pitching at Coors Field hasn't been good to him, however, whereas Camden Yards is a little less hitter-friendly.  He's allowing an .856 OPS in nine interleague appearances, but those have always been coming in to play AL teams.  Troy Tulowitzki has just 2 hits in 7 ABs, but he's been hit by pitches twice.  Norris has walked Dexter Fowler five times.  It should be noted that he may be pushed back a day because he had to pitch in relief during the Diamondbacks series.

Chad Bettis is making just his fourth career start, so naturally has not faced the O's before.  This will also be his first taste of interleague play.  He hasn't started out with the best numbers, but he regularly put up good strikeout numbers in the minors (although he did not pitch in 2013 and is making his first starts above AA).

Sunday, 18 August:  Scott Feldman vs. Jhoulys Chacin
Career Numbers Feldman vs.  Rockies
Chacin vs. O's

Feldman has two appearances against the Rockies and both have come in relief at Coors Field.  He's allowed four runs in just over 2 innings, which isn't nearly promising.  It also doesn't help that he's struggled so far for the Orioles.  In interleague play, he's allowed a .711 OPS (28 appearances, 17 starts).  Michael Cuddyer has especially feasted on the pitching of Scott Feldman (1.802 OPS in 14 PA).

Jhoulys Chacin will mark the third of three Rockies starters to make their first ever appearances against the O's (and at Camden Yards).  He's got the best numbers of all 6 probable pitchers in interleague games (only starter below a .700 OPS).  Nate McLouth has a hit in 4 AB with 3 walks (1.071 OPS).
