In the seventh inning of Monday's game against the Rays, Manny Machado grounded a ball to second and ran hard to first base. The grounder was not gloved cleanly and Machado reached base safely. As he crossed first base, his knee appeared to buckle and he crumpled to the ground, clutching his knee to his body, looking to be in serious pain.
The play was routine. Machado jogged the last few steps into first, stepped on the edge of the base a little funny. His knee collapsed inward and he went down immediately.
Machado was on the field for several minutes and had to be removed from the field on a stretcher. All worst-case scenarios, including a torn ACL and surgery that could take him out next season, appear to be in play as possibilities. Prepare for the idea of a lack of Machado for at least part of next season.
