Jacob Landis injured in hit-and-run accident while riding for charity

Jacob Landis had to cut his ride short this weekend when he was the victim of a hit-and-run on Highway 27 in Polk County, Florida on Saturday.

Almost a month ago I posted a story about Camden Chatter Jacob Landis, who spent his summer on a cross country bicycling trip to raise money for cochlear implants. Jacob's ride came to a sad and premature end on Saturday when he was hit by a truck as he rode the final leg of his trip from Tampa Bay (where he had been to game one of the series between the Rays and Orioles) to Miami.

According to WJLA.com, Jacob suffered a concussion, a broken nose, and multiple facial fractures. I'm friends with Jacob on Facebook and he posted a few pictures of his injuries that were quite unpleasant. He fell 140 miles short of his journey.

Jacob was hit by the mirror of a passing tractor trailer and the driver didn't even bother stopping. The police in Polk County, where he was hit, are currently trying to track the truck and driver down.

The last scheduled stop of Jacob's ride was at tonight's game between the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies. Even though he couldn't ride his bike there, Jacob will be in attendance to celebrate the end of his long road.

As of last month, Jacob had raised about $100,000 for his charity, and he has a goal of raising $1M. Jacob has spent months on this dream of his, and if you visit JacobsRide.com you can read all about why this cause is so important to Jacob. I encourage you to head over there and read the story of his life and how improved it was when he received cochlear implants. And then, if you're so inclined, give him a few dollars of support.
