Orioles minors: Aberdeen IronBirds finish 2013 season with sweep, first playoff game Friday

The rest of the Orioles' minor league teams finished up on Labor Day, but the IronBirds had a few more games. They finished their season with a sweep of the Lowell Spinners and now head to the playoffs.

Aberdeen IronBirds 5, Lowell Spinners 4

The IronBirds were tied at 2-2 with the Spinners going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Ronarsy Ledesma smacked a go-ahead three-run homer. They'd end up needing all three of those runs as the Spinners scored two runs in the ninth, but fell short in their rally. The IronBirds won the game and completed a three-game sweep to finish the season.

Mitch Horacek started for the IronBirds and pitched five strong innings. He allowed just one run on five hits and no walks. He struck out five. He was followed by a parade of relievers, including Augey BIll, who gave up the second run of the game with three hits allowed in just 2/3 of an inning.

Ledesma led the day offensively with two runs scored and two hits including his homer, and just-named IronBirds' MVP Trey Mancini also had two hits. Jared Breen had a single, an RBI, and a run scored.

The IronBirds had clinched their division on Monday and were just padding the win totals at this time. Tomorrow is their first playoff game as they faced the Tri-City ValleyCats at home. The series is a best-of-three format and they'll play games two and three (if necessary) at Tri-City. Sebastian Vader will take the ball for the IronBirds tomorrow night.

If the IronBirds win the first playoff series they'll move on to the league championship, which will begin on either Sept 9th or 10th.
