We only have one recap for you today as both the Norfolk Tides and the Frederick Keys had a scheduled day off and the Bowie Baysox were rained out. But what about the mighty Shorebirds?
Delmarva Shorebirds 0, Savannah Sand Gnats 1
The Shorebirds outhit the Sand Gnats last night, but couldn't scrape across even one run. Gnats starting pitcher Ricky Knapp dominated, holding our Birds to just four singles over 7 1/3 innings. They added three more hits after he left, including two in the ninth inning to start the inning, but couldn't rally. Other than LF Gregory Lorenzo and DH Conor Bierfeldt, every member of the Shorebirds starting lineup had exactly one single. Only leadoff hitter Mike Yastrzemski was on base more than once as he drew a walk in addition to his single.
LHP Steven Brault started for the Shorebirds and pitched five innings with four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. His lone run allowed came in the fifth inning when, with the bases loaded via three straight ground ball singles (only one of which reached the outfield), he threw a wild pitch. Ouch. Dennis Torres pitched two innings in relief with two singles allowed and two strikeouts, and Jimmy Yacabonis pitched a perfect inning after that.
