Orioles Minor League Rundown: 5/19/14

Just two games yesterday, each featuring Orioles-affiliate victories

Bert Hindman

Erie (Tigers) 3 Bowie 14

BOOM, goes the dynamite. And BOOM went (CF) Dariel Alvarez. 4 for 5 on the night with a HR, 2 doubles, and 6 RBI. He is now slashing .349 / .364 / .568 over 177 plate appearances this season. Have to figure he'll get a look at Norfolk sometime in June should he keep up this pace while in Bowie. Fresh off his Eastern League Player of the Week nod, (1B) Christian Walker was held hitless, but did contribute by drawing 2 walks over his 5 plate appearances. (DH) Kyeong Kang knocked 3 hits and drew a walk in his 5 PAs. And ( C ) Michael Ohlman smacked a 2 RBI double. Garabez Rosa has cooled off considerably after his scorching start to the season, though he still sports an overall line of .321 / .338 / .481. Playing LF today he did managed to blast his 3rd HR of the season.

(LHP) Tim Berry made his 9th start of the season. He pitched a fine game vs. Richmond last time on the mound, and followed that up with a decent but brief outing yesterday. 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BBs, 1 ER, and 6 Ks. He threw 61 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He needs to start working further into games, as he is averaging under 6 IP per start.

Delmarva 6 West Virginia (Pirates) 2

(LHP) Steven Brault has now strung together 7 straight impressive performances for the Shorebirds. Not a fantastic line for him this game as he allowed 4 hits and 3 walks over his 6 innings pitched. But he managed to hold the WV squad to just 2 runs (1 earned) in that time. If you take out his terrible first start of the season he has now pitched 42 innings and allowed just 6 earned runs while striking out 43 vs. 10 walks issued. Frederick's rotation is currently lacking a regular 5th starter. I wonder if Brault may get the call up sometime this week to fill that spot?

(1B) Trey Mancini had 2 more base hits yesterday, and is now hitting .297 / .350 / .364 over 180 plate appearances this season. The lack of power is disappointing, certainly. But the approach seems to be sound, and hopefully the power will come as he gains some more professional seasoning. (RF) Mike Yastrzemski had a brief yet interesting night. He knocked a single to lead off the game and eventually scored via a Trey Mancini GIDP. Then, in the 2nd inning he reached via an error that plated 2 runs. He was quickly erased from the basepaths though via a pickoff throw from the catcher. Yaz argued the call and got tossed from the game. (CF) Josh Hart got a base hit, a stolen base (his 6th in 8 attempts), and a run scored.
