Orioles Minor League Rundown: 6-17-14

Minor League All Star game performances. Mike Wright struggles with Norfolk. Michael Ohlman is heating up in Bowie.

Tim Jacobsen

Syracuse (Nationals) 5 Norfolk 3

The struggles of Mike Wright continue. Over 5 innings of work in this game he allowed 4 ERs via 5 hits (1 HR) and 3 walks. He K'd 3, induced 1 GIDP, and threw 64 of his 94 pitches for strikes. Relatively speaking however, this actually marks his most successful outing since May 6th. So that's something, I suppose.

Julio Borbon and Brett Wallace each knocked two hits on the night. Steve Clevenger went 1 for 4 with an RBI, and threw out 1 of 2 base stealers. Jemile Weeks went 1 for 4 with a double.

Bowie 5 Trenton (Yankees) 2

Tyler Wilson continues to log innings. 7 more in this game. He allowed 6 hits and a walk, resulting in 2 ERs, while striking out 3 and inducing 11 ground outs to just 3 fly outs. Dariel Alvarez and Michael Ohlman did the bulk of the damage on offense. Alvarez blasted a 3 run HR in the 8th to break a tie game open. Ohlman went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. All of those runs were driven in with 2 outs. Christian Walker was held to an 0 for 3 line, but did draw 1 walk.

Aberdeen 3 Staten Island (Yankees) 4

Poor Aberdeen. Off to an 0-5 start, they led 3-1 after 7 innings in this game before coughing up the lead in the 9th. 23 year old RHP Nick Cunningham pitched 5 solid innings; striking out 3 and walking none while allowing just 2 hits and 1 unearned run. The defense was rather horrid for the Ironbirds, committing 3 throwing errors and 1 fielding error. The baserunning was the opposite, as they managed to swipe 4 bases in 5 attempts. Alex Murphy went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI. Hector Veloz went 2 for 5 with a SB, 2 Ks, and 1 of the aforementioned throwing errors.

Another game, another walk drawn for 17 year old Carlos Diaz. Unfortunately, the same can be said of errors for the young 1Bman as he had another one of those as well, his 5th. 20 year old Infielder Sergio Lamas hit a triple and drove in the only run for the O's. 19 year old RHP Victor Romero went 6 IP and allowed no runs or walks while striking out 5.

(INF) Ricardo Andujar went 2 for 4. 19 year old (OF) Luis Chaves was held hitless in his 4 at bats, but did earn an outfield assist. 21 year old (RHP) Elvis Diaz pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 3 ER via 6 hits.

Carolina League All Star Game

Glynn Davis went 0 for 2, but earned an RBI with a ground out in the 5th inning. Branden Kline threw a clean 8th inning, throwing 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes.

South Atlantic League All Star Game

Hunter Harvey made the start for the SAL All Stars. He allowed a lead off double to David Dahl and issued a walk to Gavin Cecchini before getting 3 outs via fielders choice, pop out, and fly out. He threw 14 pitches, 8 for strikes. Mike Yastrzemski went 1 for 2. Drew Dosch went 0 for 3. Trey Mancini went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the bottom of the 10th which tied the game. Sebastian Vader gave up 2 earned runs in his 1 inning of work. He walked 2 and allowed 2 base hits, while also striking out 2. Dylan Rheault pitched a clean inning, recording 1 K. Jimmy Yacabonis blew the save opportunity in the top of the 10th, allowing 2 ER via 2 hits and 2 walks.
