Orioles Minor League Rundown: 6/2/14

The baby Birds win 2 out of 5 games on the day, but put together a number of good pitching performances.

Christopher McCain/Norfolk Tides

Pawtucket (Red Sox) 1 Norfolk 3

Eddie Gamboa has the knuckler dancing as the weather warms. 5 IP and 7 Ks for the Tides last night; he allowed just 1 hit but walked 3 and hit 1 batter. Evan Meek came on to close out the game for his 2nd Save. He K'd 2 and allowed a single. The offense was paced by Quinten Berry and Ivan De Jesus who each had 2 hits. Berry added his 11 stolen base.

Wilmington (Royals) 3 Frederick 0

Branden Kline handled a dangerous Wilmington lineup with aplomb, yielding 6 hits, 3 BBs, and 1 ER over 6.2 IP where he K'd 5. But the pitchers for Wilmington were a bit better, as they held the Keys offense to just 3 hits and 2 walks on the night. Brenden Webb hit a double and K'd. Adrian Marin, coming off his Player of the Week nod was held hitless in 3 at bats and committed his 9th error of the season in the field.

Delmarva 2 Hagerstown (Nationals) 4

(SS) Justin Viele had a very bad night. 0 for 4 at the plate is bad enough, but he added 4 errors (2 throwing, 2 fielding) to the ledger. Ouch. But it wouldn't be a Shorebirds game without an Outfield Assist. Tonight's was provided courtesy of (RF) Coner Bierfeldt who threw out a runner attempting to advance from 2nd to 3rd on a fly out. (1B) Trey Mancini went 3 for 4 at the plate, including his 2nd HR of the season in the 4th. (CF) Mike Yastrzemski managed another multi-hit night, going 2 for 5. (LF) Gregory Lorenzo stole his 18th bag of the season.

(RHP) Sebastian Vader failed to go 7 IP for the first time in 4 starts. But he did go 6, and may have been able to handle 7 if not for some shoddy defense behind him that cost him 2 unearned runs. He allowed 5 hits and 2 BBs, chucked a wild pitch and K'd 5 while generating 13 ground outs to just 2 fly outs. hummina hummina.

DSL Twins 3 DSL O'sUno 5

DSL O'sDos 1 DSL Cardinals 4

In the Twins game, 19 year old Luis Chaves went 3 for 3 w/ a SB, a sac fly, and a walk. (LF) Jorge Gil added a single, a SB, and 2 walks. (SS) Ricardo Andujar stole 2 bases, including Home. In the Cardinals game, (1B) Carlos Diaz debuted. He is the 17 year old kid signed out of Mexico over the winter. He drew 2 walks and K'd once in his 4 plate appearances. (3B) Yeridolfo Lizardo added two walks of his own in addition to smacking a double. (SS) Guillermo Salas popped a triple.

Curacao native Wendell Floranus went 4.2 inning vs. the Twins and allowed 5 hits and 2 ERs. He K'd 3. 23 year old RHP Juan Valdez K'd 5 Cardinals over 5 innings which saw him allow 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 ER.
