Orioles minor league rundown, 7/16/2014

The senior affiliates are swept away...

The Tides were off last night, but Ivan DeJesus went 2-4 as the International League All Stars defeated the Pacific Coast League All Stars 7-3.

Frederick Keys 5, Salem Red Sox 8

They spiking the Gatorade in Frederick? Another outing in Dylan Bundy's rehab, more unsettling results. Bundy allowed six earned runs on six hits and two walks in four innings. Bundy also struck out a batter and induced seven groundouts. Anybody out there see this in person and care to comment? Jimmy Yacabonis pitched two scoreless innings and has now gone three outings without being scored on after allowing runs in his first four Carolina League appearances.

Adrian Marin hit a two run homer and continues his promising July. He's slashed .310/.370/.476 which includes four walks in 11 games (he walked six times in 27 May games which is his previous best this season). Glynn Davis was 2-5 and Brenden Webb doubled, but was also charged with an error.

Delmarva Shorebirds 1, Greensboro Grasshoppers 5

Nick Cunningham again failed to squirm out of early trouble as he allowed two runs in the second inning and three in the third. To be fair, Cunningham was hard done by a Jared Breen error that was key to the second inning rally. Drew Dosch was also charged with an error later in the game that ended up being inconsequential. Williams Louico and Garrett Cortright were nearly perfect the rest of the way.

Conor Bierfeldt hit his 10th homer of the season. Bierfeldt now has over 500 minor league plate appearances and has developed pretty pronounced reverse splits. Bierfeldt has hit 21 of his 22 career homers against righties and is slashing .257/.344/.508 against righties compared to .196/.275/.304 versus southpaws. Josh Hart was also hitless and Chance Sisco singled.

Aberdeen Ironbirds 3, Tri City ValleyCats 5

This game featured five errors, two passed balls and a pickoff. Exciting times in the New York Penn League. On the positive side, Stephen Tarpley was not charged with an earned run in four innings of work. If you had a chance to see this game, I wonder if you had "Yakety Sax" running on a loop in your head as you watched the Ironbirds play defense. Not the best day for Alex Murphy, what with the passed balls and a throwing error.

Jamil Moquette and Hector Veloz homered. Veloz has been playing angry in July as he's slashed .293/.41/2.585. Austin Anderson also doubled, his fourth in his first ten professional games.

Rookie League Notes

  • The DSL O's second team, generally the weaker of the two, hung 23 runs on a beleaguered Mariners squad. Florida born Phildrick Llewelyn, an intriguing castoff from the Diamondbacks organization, swatted an Earl Weaver special, ringer (22 years old) Ramon Ramirez had four hits and 19 year old Venezuelan outfielder Ivan Mora fell a homer short of the cycle and drove in five runs.
  • The GCL O's played two. Jonatan Isenia struck out five as they blanked the Red Sox 6-0 in game 2 and Brian Gonzalez struck out four in three shutout innings in game 1. Gonzalez has not allowed an earned run in three appearances for the GCL O's since signing an overslot deal in June.
  • Jomar Reyes hit his first professional homer
