Orioles Minor League Rundown: 7-19-14

An exciting night of prospecti-ness throughout the O's system.

Rochester (Twins) 2 Norfolk 4

After nearly a month on the shelf with shoulder wonkiness(RHP) Suk-min Yoon returned to game action and pitched well in his brief outing: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 R, 1 K. (1B) Christian Walker has taken to AAA just fine. A 3 for 3 night for him, he also walked and knocked a 2 RBI double in the Tides' 3 run 7th inning. (RF) Dariel Alvarez went 1 for 3 with a Sac fly.

Bowie 3 Altoona (Pirates) 4

(RHP) Zach Davies avoided giving up any big innings, but he did get nicked for a single run in 4 different innings. The first came in via a wild pitch. The second via a lead-off home run. The third via a sacrifice fly. And the fourth after a fielder's choice and then back to back singles as Davies' pitch count climbed into the 90s. So, while his line isn't particularly great (6.1 IP, 9 H, 2 WPs, 1 HR, 4 ER) it seems the bulk of the damage done by the Curve was via weak contact singles and heady baserunning mixed with small-ball tactics. Davies didn't walk any batter and K'd 7 of 'em while managing a 6 to 6 ground out to fly out ratio. OF the 9 hits yielded by Zach, just 3 were classified as either line drives or fly balls. Over his last nine starts he is sporting a 3.29 ERA with 54 Ks and 18 walks over 52 IP. All this by a 21 year old in AA who is just 2 months older than Eduardo Rodriguez. Here's hoping this kid gets some legitimate prospect love over the off-season (so long as he's not, you know, traded at the deadline beforehand).

Like Christian Walker in AAA, Mike 'Giancarlo' Yastrzemski has taken to AA with a fury. 1 for 3 with a walk, a double, and a run scored for him in this game. He's sporting a 3 game AA line of .500 / .538 / .833.

Winston-Salem (White Sox) 3 Frederick 5

(RHP) Branden Kline earned his first Win in front of his home-town crowd, going 6 and allowing just 5 hits, no walks, and 1 ER; he K'd 4. This is a nice outing for him after a 5 start stretch of 6.84 ERA pitching. (RHP) Matt Hobgood came on to pitch 2 innings. He allowed 2 unearned runs, the first thanks to a passed ball, the second via Hobgood's own error fielding a ball.

(CF) Glynn Davis went 2 for 4 with a run scored, but also got caught stealing. (SS) Adrian Marin has moved up to the 2nd spot in the lineup now that Lil' Yaz has moved up to AA. He went 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored. (LF) Michael Burgess is having the season of his life (though it helps being a 25 year old in A-ball). He went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and is slashing .318 / .371 / .589 this season.

Hagerstown (Nats) 6 Delmarva 5

Tough matchup for the Shorebirds as they faced off against Lucas Giolito. The Nats' top prospect, and one of the few pitching prospects in the minors who can lay claim to a higher ranking than Hunter Harvey, dominated the 'Birds over the first 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 9. The 'Birds got to him in the 6th, drawing a lead off walk followed by Josh Hart's second single off Giolito. The walk would come around to score, as would Gregory Lorenzo later in the inning after reaching via a fielder's choice. The offense would make a run at tying the game up off the 'pen, but alas they would fall short. (CF) Josh Hart managed a 3 for 5 night. (1B) Creede Simpson went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, and 3 RBI. ( C ) Chance Sisco's 18 game hitting streak was halted with an 0 for 4 game. (RHP) Janser Severino made his second A-ball start, and gave up 5 ER via 9 hits over 5 innings.

Aberdeen 3 Mahoning Valley (Cleveland) 5

Big 'ol Bennett Parry (listed at 6'5", 225 lbs.) started and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over 4.2 IP. He walked 3 and K'd 4. (3B) Austin Anderson went 2 for 4. (1B) Hector Veloz knocked in a run and went 1 for 4, but also earned his 7th error of the season with a missed catch. Your nightly Outfield Assist belonged to (CF) Jay Gonzalez, who cut down a runner at 2B.

GCL O's 1 GCL Rays 2

The GCLers were held to just 4 hits on the day, and drew only 1 walk. (CF) Daniel Franco went 1 for 3 with a SB, scoring the lone run and drawing the lone walk. (LHP) Daniel Ayers started and yielded an unearned run over 3 no-hit & no-walk innings.
