New, comments

The Orioles were rained out tonight, but there is plenty of American League action worth watching tonight.

When you spend six months of the year watching baseball, an unscheduled off day might leave you wondering what to do with your time. Never fear! There is plenty of baseball action tonight for you to watch and chat about. In the American League playoff race department, we have:

Detroit Tigers @ Pittsburgh Pirates, 7:05 p.m.
Robbie Ray (LHP) vs. Edinson Volquez (RHP)

The Tigers are now in second place in the AL Central after losing five of their last six and being generally miserable of late. The team with the last three Cy Young winners is sending Robbie Ray to the mound tonight. That's right. And tomorrow they have someone named Buck Farmer pitching for them. Rough times in Detroit. There is also rain in the forecast for this game.

Oakland A's at Kansas City Royals, 8:10 p.m.
Jon Lester (LHP) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (RHP)

There are a lot of reasons to root for the Royals. One, they're currently 1/2 game ahead of the Tigers for first place in the AL Central, and it would be awesome if they stayed there. Two, the Royals haven't been in the playoffs since 1985! And we thought we had it bad? Three, the A's are currently four games ahead of the Orioles for best record in the American League. I'd like the Orioles to be first. Four, Guthrie is pitching for the Royals, and he's awesome.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. Philadelphia Phillies, 10:05 p.m.
C.J. Wilson (LHP) vs. Jerome Williams (RHP)

I have a hard time caring about the Angels either way, but they're currently 3 1/2 games behind the A's in the AL West and 4 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers for the 1st wild card spot. They're also 1/2 game ahead of the Orioles in the race for the best record in the AL, so go Phillies!

Toronto Blue Jays @ Seattle Mariners, 10:10 p.m.
J.A. Happ (LHP) vs. Chris Young (RHP)

Even if you're not rooting for the Mariners to pass the Tigers and take that second WC spot (as I am), you still have to root for them tonight. The Blue Jays are 3-7 over their last ten games and falling fast. I, for one, am enjoying it.

Other AL East teams playing tonight who are fun to watch lose:

Boston Red Sox @ Cincinnati Reds, 7:10 p.m.
Joe Kelly (RHP) vs. Mat Latos (RHP)

Tampa Bay Rays @ Texas Rangers, 8:05 p.m.
Jeremy Hellickson (RHP) vs. Nick Tepesch (RHP)

Feel free to use this thread to talk up any of the games in the MLB tonight, other sporting events, or any other topic. Except politics. Let's stick with the rules for gamethreads in this one, ok? Thanks!
