Orioles minor league rundown 7/21: Mike Wright the ground ball machine

There was one blowout by an Orioles affiliate on Tuesday and not a whole lot else that was exciting, although Aberdeen's pitchers struck out a whole bunch of dudes. That was pretty cool.

Norfolk Tides 12, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 2

An Orioles affiliate beating down a Red Sox affiliate - that's the way it should be. Poor Keith Couch for the PawSox ended up wearing nine runs on three innings, and if he keeps pitching like that he's going to have to spend a lot of time on the couch watching baseball because he won't be on the diamond.

All of the first three Norfolk hitters, Henry Urrutia, Rey Navarro, and Christian Walker, had three hits apiece. Urrutia hit his sixth home run of the year and drove in three runs total. Walker hit two doubles. He's working on a five-game hitting streak.

Not to be lost amidst all of the offense was a great start by Mike Wright, who's actually undefeated for the Tides in 2015. He shut out the PawSox in his 6.1 innings of work, giving up only three hits and two walks, although he only struck out one batter. One strikeout is not so impressive, but he racked up 13 groundouts. That's what I'm talking about.

Reading (Phillies) 6, Bowie Baysox 4

Hey, do you remember Jason Garcia? He's on injury rehab for Bowie right now... and he gave up three runs, two earned, in three innings of work. Oh, geez. He gave up three hits and three walks. Well, that's something.

Here's some good news. My man Trey Mancini was mashing for another game, notching two hits, including a double. That line for Bowie through 38 games is now a .347/.371/.580. I like this guy.

Potomac (Walgreens) 7, Frederick Keys 0

Nothing to see here. The Keys only got three hits. Move along, move along.

Delmarva Shorebirds - OFF

Aberdeen IronBirds 1, State College (Cardinals) 0

This game had a combined eight hits and only the one run, so it probably wasn't all that exciting to watch, but hey, Aberdeen won. So that's cool! Actually, if you dig a little deeper, there was plenty of cool stuff here, including the fact that IronBirds pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters. 2014 sixth rounder Tanner Scott worked three innings of relief and struck out six batters.

Two of Aberdeen's four hits came from D.J. Stewart, the 2015 first rounder. He's still only hitting .186 on the season but he's batted 5-11 over the last three games, including the two home runs he hit yesterday.
