The Wednesday afternoon Orioles game thread: at Mariners, 3:40pm

It kinda feels like the Orioles postseason hopes are slowly slipping away here in August. Perhaps they can halt that negative trend starting today against the Mariners.

Are you prepared for a game where Ryan Flaherty is both the starting shortstop and probable backup catcher? That's what's happening here. Matt Wieters left last night's game with a hamstring strain and there's very little chance he's available even a little bit today. We're one unluckily-placed foul ball into Caleb Joseph's body away from a site so beautiful and terrible that I am not sure our mortal eyes are meant to see it.

As for the Orioles themselves - well, they've still yet to either win or lose consecutive games in August, which after 11 days is actually kind of impressive. It's also terrible since the Orioles are currently on the outside looking in on the postseason picture. Going .500 the rest of the way isn't going to consign them to the briny 90+ loss deeps to which we became accustomed a decade hence, but it's not going to bring any playoff stuff back to Camden Yards, either.

Another disappointing starter awaits them today. Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma has missed two months of the 2015 campaign, and in the ten games he has started, he's sporting a 4.41 ERA. That's not so good, although in the seven games since returning from the DL, Iwakuma has held batters to a .232/.261/.401 batting line, which actually doesn't sound that bad. What that means for this Orioles lineup today - well, who knows.

Same as every game, they need to not suck at the plate and have their starting pitcher not suck. Get both of those things in conjunction and most of the time you'll win.
