The Orioles go for the sweep against the Athletics on Monday night. Pulling off a four-game sweep is hard. Pulling off a four-game sweep when the fourth game has the other team starting Sonny Gray is also hard. And it might be even harder considering the O's starter is Chris Tillman, most recently seen getting blasted from the mound after allowing a boatload of runs in less than three full innings of work.
Considering all of that, I have probably made a poor choice in deciding to attend tonight's game. Oh well. If you want to hang your hat on the Orioles having done well against Gray in his career thus far, I guess you can, but they haven't faced him yet this year, and there are a lot of new faces since the last time they faced him. There was a game last year where they hung five runs on him in 5.1 innings. That's good! David Lough hit a two run home run in the game. I don't think they'll be able to count on one of those tonight.
Where does all of this leave them? I don't know. Before the game begins it leaves them a half-game up for the second wild card spot, which game will be played on October 6. Currently the Orioles would play it in Rogers Centre, which as you are well aware is something of a desolate hellscape for them. If the Jays pass the Yankees then it would be at Yankee Stadium instead.
Do you want one game against David Price or Masahiro Tanaka to settle everything? Not really me either... but it's better than not even having a shot, and it's definitely better than the team being on a trajectory to lose 90+ games.
