Wednesday Bird Droppings

The Orioles got deGrominated last night, but did you really expect anything else? I feel like they can win tonight, and a split with the first-place Mets isn't bad at all.

The Orioles are ending the season in a really tough stretch. The only bad team they play for the rest of the season is the Boston Red Sox, against whom they have six games. Other than that it's all teams like the Yankees, Blue Jays, Royals. Technically the Twins dropped below .500 last night and they'll be in town this weekend, but they still hope they're in it so watch out. It could be brutal. But it could also be awesome. You really just never know with this team.

New York Mets knock off Baltimore Orioles |
They made it interesting at the end, but a four-run deficit in the ninth is tough to overcome. Britt Ghiroli has all the Mets and Orioles quotes you need.

Mets’ Syndergaard Is 7-1 at Home, 0-5 on the Road. Here’s Why - WSJ
Noah Syndergaard has a 5.01 ERA the road. The Mets think it could be because he's sitting idly for 20 extra minutes before pitching, so they're changing his routine to cut down some of that. Knowing the Orioles' luck, it'll work wonders.

Zach Britton, Chris Davis Provide Rare Combination of Pitching and Power | Roar From 34
The Orioles are in the unique position to have a pitcher with 30+ saves and a hitter with 40+ home runs for the third straight season. Before 2013 it had only happened one other time in Orioles history.

Baltimore Orioles 2016: Choose Your Own Adventure - Baltimore Sports and Life
To my extreme disappointment, this is not actually a Choose Your Own Adventure. It is, however, some thoughts on how the 2016 Orioles could be built to win.

School of Roch: Hardy: "I haven't been getting hits and that all needs to change"
J.J. Hardy sound sad, y'all. Hopefully Tyler's article from yesterday isn't right and he'll bounce back soon.

Yankees' CC Sabathia involved in Toronto street fight before missed start - Baltimore Sun
CC Sabathia was getting heckled at at nightclub in Toronto. Happens everywhere! This headline was misleading, though. You tell me someone is involved in a street fight, I'm not expecting an argument followed by CC getting into a cab. I'm expecting this:

Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You share your birthday with current Oriole and sad man J.J. Hardy! J.J. turns 33 years old today. It's also the birthday of six other former Orioles, none of whom topped 50 games played for the O's. They are: Lance Cormier ('08), Rocky Cherry ('07-'08), Luis DeLeon ('87), Paul Mitchell ('75), Jim Lehew ('61), and Jim Finigan ('59).

Other birthdays today include fashion designer Coco Chanel (1883-1971), inventor Orville Wright (1871-1948), and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991). Among the living who are celebrating today are former president Bill Clinton (69 yrs), former Chandler Matthew Perry (46), and current NFL'er Kirk Cousins (27).

Not much notable happened on this day in Orioles history, although in 2001 the Orioles came back from a 6-1 deficit against the Red Sox to win 13-7, so that was probably a fun game. Jeff Conine had five hits.

In non-Orioles history, it was on this day in 1909 that the first ever car race took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, current home of the Indianapolis 500. In 1953 the Iranian military overthrew the Iranian government with a little help from the CIA, and in 2011 the West Memphis Three were released from prison after serving 18 years.
