Today's Angels starter is Jered Weaver, who this year is chucking in a fastball with an average velocity of 83.9mph. This junkball has him sporting a 4.75 ERA this season. Other than the fact that his $85 million contract continues through to next season, there's not much reason to think he'd be continuing as a professional baseball player. That is the kind of bad from which there's probably no coming back.
Of course, Weaver has already dominated the Orioles lineup once this year, because that's how the Orioles roll. Back in mid-May he held them to a run on three hits in 7.1 innings, and the one run scored as the result of a home run. They were bad that night. Some different faces will be in the lineup today and they will probably still be bad. This slop destroys them.
They could use a good effort against Weaver because as of now, the Angels are the team they are chasing for a playoff spot. They're two games back. Lose today and it's three games. Win today and it's a mere game, still leaving the Orioles with work to do, of course, but it's work they are capable of doing - if they play their best, which is never a sure thing. Maybe they will this afternoon. That would be nice of them.
