The O's lost, Tyler Wilson gets an education, and Zach Britton swears he's fine.

Mahtook's five hits help Rays beat Orioles (w/ video) | Tampa Bay Times
"Mikie Mahtook has felt increasingly more comfortable during each of his six stints with the Rays this season. And it has become tremendously more obvious to see. The athletic rookie outfielder showed off again Friday, rapping a team-record-tying five hits in the Rays' 8-6 win over the Orioles." The O's gave up five hits to a guy named Mikie. Starting to feel like 2007 up in here...

School of Roch: Inexperience in the rotation, Mychal Givens and tonight's game
"If the Orioles are going to make that magical run and qualify as the second wild card - they remain 4 1/2 games behind the Astros - they'll do so with an inexperienced starter in the rotation or a healthy Miguel Gonzalez trying to salvage his season. Maybe both. It's not an ideal setup by any stretch of the imagination." I wonder if Roch will get a sternly worded letter from his employer for being less than enthusiastic about the Orioles' playoff chances.

Orioles notebook: Zach Britton stays mum on why he hasn't closed since Tuesday - Baltimore Sun
"Everyone at this point in the season has got a little something going on. With the three days of throwing, and I got warmed up the day before, just trying to give me two days [off]," Britton said. "I think I kind of needed those two days with the workload that I had, and then just being ready to go for the rest of the season." I'm pretty much OK with a needed member of the bullpen getting a couple of days off to rest. Nothing to see here, hopefully.

Will the Orioles sell high on Zach Britton? - BaseballEssential
"Zach Britton has saved only six games in August and September. Britton could become more valuable to the Orioles as trade bait."

Orioles Buzz: Matthew Taylor: Comparing the Orioles and Nationals seasons
"Who has had it worse this season, Baltimore Orioles fans or Washington Nationals fans? The two teams will square off next week in a series that fans of each franchise had expected to be a tune-up for postseason play. Instead, it will be a match-up of drowning teams gasping desperately for a breath of playoff air."

There’s still Orioles Magic in the air in Baltimore - DelmarvaNow.com
"With 16 games left to the go, the Orioles are four-and-a-half games back of the second place wild card holder, Houston. Though the Astros have gone 2-8 in their last ten games to surrender the division lead to Texas, Baltimore would have to stretch out their current hot streak like an Adam Jones’ chewing gum bubble. But hey, just like in the major 1994 major motion picture Angels in the Outfield, "it could happen!" Sure it could.

Happy Birthday to former Orioles Danny Valencia, Nick Johnson, Randy Myers, and Bob Turley.

On this date in Orioles history...

1963 - At Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, 476 lonely fans watch the Angels and Orioles game. The Angels win, 7 - 2, behind Bo Belinsky. And as we all know, that's not the lowest paid attendance for an MLB game.

Today marks the start of marching band season, and I'm already running late to get the boy to school in time. So, you're on your own for other history and birthdays. Watch Bellator tonight, there's a 4-man tournament for light heavyweight title contender. And Tito Ortiz fights for some reason. Don't know why.
