Welcome to the weekend, and in the mid-Atlantic, at least, it's shaping up to be a nice one. Now, let's go to Bill with sports...

The Day That Never Comes

Orioles sell Zach Britton jersey from game he didn't pitch |
It probably smells like fabric softener. (EDITOR'S NOTE: I wish I came up with that line. But I didn't. did)

Heyman - Showalter Offers Thoughts On 'Inexplicable Call'
"You never assume you’re going to be in a closing situation. That’s what makes the postseason different," Buck Showalter said at one point. "If we played at home it might be a different dynamic," Showalter also said.

MLB roundup: Previewing well-stocked slugger market; ALCS set to begin - Buster Olney Blog- ESPN
"Given how the market for sluggers is setting up, it might behoove the Orioles to wait for somebody to fall to them again this offseason, because there will be a stunning number of first-base/DH/corner-outfield bashers available, and likely only a few of them are going to be paid as well as they expect, given their run production."

Because You Asked - Next Friday - School of Roch
Why did Dave Wallace keep leaving the team during the season? It was a family matter the beat writers choose to not divulge. I'm OK with that.

What should the Orioles do to be better in 2017? - Steve Melewski
"From 2015 to 2016, the Orioles won eight more games, going from 81 to 89 wins. If they could now add six or eight more - maybe not even that many - they could end the 2017 season as American League East champions." And if I grew 16 inches taller, I could be starting center for the Minnesota Timberwolves. I'll get right on that.

Brady Anderson Inducted Into Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame " CBS Baltimore
"Orioles Hall of Famer and current vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson, along with seven other sports personalities, will be inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame on Thursday, November 3."

Birthday and History

Happy Birthday to former Orioles Chad Mottola, Glenn Gulliver, and ol' Cakes himself, Hall of Fame pitcher and Mr. "Did you know I never gave up a grand slam?" Jim Palmer. Please broadcast more games next year! We need you and Gary together forever!

They share this birthday with famous people including 70 BC Virgil, Roman Republican poet; 1542 Akbar, Mughal Emperor in India; 1844 Friedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher and philologist ; 1858 John L. Sullivan, heavyweight boxing champ; 1881 P G Wodehouse, British-American writer; 1908 John Kenneth Galbraith, Canadian economist; 1920 Mario Puzo, writer of "The Godfather"; 1943 Penny Marshall, American actress; and 1969 Dominic West, British actor ("The Wire").

On this day in Baltimore baseball history...

1970 - For the third time, the Baltimore Orioles overcome a 3 - 0 deficit to bury the Cincinnati Reds, 9 - 3, and win the World Series in five games. Brooks Robinson easily wins the World Series MVP Award for his hitting and unbelievable fielding.

1997 - In the ALCS, Mike Mussina pitches two-hit baseball for eight innings, but the Baltimore Orioles can't score. Starter Charles Nagy and three relievers of the Cleveland Indians strand 14 Baltimore baserunners. Tony Fernandez hits a home run in the 11th inning off Armando Benitez for the only run of the game as the Indians win the American League pennant for the second time in three years. It may have been the greatest playoff pitching performance I have ever seen.

2014 - The Orioles season ended. So, while the NLDS doesn't even start until tonight, just two years ago Game 4 of the ALCS was played on this date. In five years, the World Series will go until Thanksgiving, you watch.
