Matt Wieters exits spring training game with right elbow soreness

After only half of an inning, Matt Wieters was pulled from Saturday's Orioles spring training game with what the team later announced as "right elbow soreness." Uh oh.

Another spring training injury hit the Orioles on Saturday afternoon. Matt Wieters was removed from the game against the Twins after only half of an inning played. The team later announced Wieters had exited the game due to "right elbow soreness."

The game was neither televised nor on the radio in the Baltimore area, so the best account we have of what happened is from MASN's Roch Kubatko, who noted that Wieters made a high throw in attempting to throw out a Twins baserunner in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Wieters' turn in the order - batting sixth - came up and he was replaced by pinch hitter Henry Urrutia.

Until there's a further announcement about what exactly "right elbow soreness" means, we are only left guessing. In subsequent tweets, Kubatko described Wieters remaining in the dugout and ultimately heading off to the O's clubhouse by himself. You could probably talk yourself into that being good or bad news. Any time you hear about soreness on the same elbow that already had a Tommy John operation done on it, well, it's worrisome to me until I see him back on the field.

If it ends up being something serious, the O's catching situation is suddenly thrown into chaos. If it turns out to be something minor, then all it will really amount to is a few days more of non-MLB catchers taking spring training playing time for the O's. As Caleb Joseph has reportedly been battling a particularly nasty case of the flu, there is even more opportunity for some of those players to show what they have got.
