Orioles Game 8 GameThread: at Red Sox, 7:10 PM

The Orioles could win their eighth game in a row tonight. But will they?

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

In 2015 it took the Orioles until June 11th to get their first sweep of the season. This year they did it on April 7th. Last year it took them until June 16th to get their second sweep; this year it was April 10th. If they win tonight they'll have their eighth win in a row to start the season and their third consecutive series sweep (2015: June 28th). If they win tonight they'll be eight games over .500. In 2015 they never reached more than seven.

They're probably not going to win tonight. The reasoning for me is simple. Joe Kelly is starting for the Red Sox and really isn't very good. Ubaldo Jimenez is the only Oriole starter to pitch more than five innings in a game this year. He pitched seven innings with nine strikeouts and just one run allowed in his first start. And, unusually for Ubaldo, he didn't walk anyone.

When I wrote the series preview for this I thought this was the most favorable matchup for the Orioles, but now that it's here I feel like there is no possible way that Ubaldo could be good two starts in a row, and after the O's lineup destroyed pitchers like David Price and Chris Archer, it feels likely that a guy like Joe Kelly will be their downfall. Add into all of that the fact that they have to lose a game soon, right?
