Orioles Game 17 Game Thread: at Royals, 2:15

The Orioles turn to Mike Wright in the rubber game of their series against the Royals. Well, good luck.

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

There are four left-handed batters and one switch hitter in the Royals lineup against Mike Wright today, so we can probably write this game off as a loss already. This is one of those games where the chances of the Orioles offense overcoming the huge deficit their starting pitcher will probably put them in are not good.

Maybe that's not how it will end up playing out. Maybe Wright will perform better here than expected - after all, there's a reason why he was put in the starting rotation in the first place, and that reason probably isn't entirely desperation. Plus any pitcher can have a good game. So why not? Other than the obviously observable facts of reality, of course.

As for the O's hitters, a bit of an interesting look today with Manny Machado taking up the shortstop position for the day. It's (probably) a regular rest day for J.J. Hardy, nothing to get too worried about. Also, Chris Davis and Adam Jones have flipped spots for the day, which is also interesting.

Let's face it, Jones isn't a get on base for the home run hitters guy. He's one of the home run hitters. I mean... he's not one right yet, so a cleanup hitter batting .200/.289/.325 doesn't make you feel so great. Until his bat heats up I'm going to be wondering if his "rib soreness" has fully cleared up. Royals starting pitcher Yordano Ventura throws really hard, so good luck to the O's. They're gonna need it.
