For the first time all season, Rule 5 sensation Joey Rickard is not in the starting lineup. Everyone needs a little rest, even Rickard, though the move is probably as much about that as it is to get both Hyun Soo Kim and Pedro Alvarez into the lineup against the right-handed Mat Latos.
Speaking of getting rest, this marks the first time all season that Matt Wieters will be catching on consecutive days, although based on comments from the Orioles beat writers, it seems the only reason this is the case is because tomorrow's day game plus Monday's off day means Wieters will have a chance to get two days off after this. If a guy can only catch consecutive days when there's two days rest afterwards, is he really the starting catcher?
With Rickard out of there, Manny Machado is leading off. Adam Jones returns from the #5 spot to a more top of the order spot, which will look like a better decision if he carries over his success from two nights ago into tonight. He'll have to do that against Latos, who has a 0.74 ERA over his first four starts.
That's actually ridiculous. This is freaking Mat Latos! With Chris Sale due to pitch tomorrow, it would be nice if the O's could find a way to steal this one and seal the four game series win. Oh, and if Kevin Gausman wants to pitch another good game and maybe go at least six innings this time, that would be grand.
