World Series with my dad.

It was right after the Aaron Boone game in 2003 that my phone rang. Back then I worked evenings and didn't get home until around 10:30. So while phone calls at well past 11 were rare, they were not unheard of. I figure it was a Mets fan friend of mine wanting to revel in GFN's agony.

But no, it was my dad. No "hello" No, "Have you called your sisters recently?" Just, "Can you get down here for game 3 on Tuesday?" I said I didn't think it was a problem but that it was a little late to call the boss to be sure. He said don't wait until you get in in the afternoon. Call at 9 tomorrow and then call him back right away. So I did. And the next Monday I was off to Florida.

Now since he moved to FL I don't think I ever visited him without at least one of my sisters being there as well. The TLDR version is that because I was the only one still living at home at the time (in between semesters, anyway), it was tougher for me when my parents split up than it was for my sisters. And more years later than I care to admit I was still carrying some of that.

But such is the magnificent power of baseball that not a hint of a trace of any of that came up during my visit. So we get to the game, and you know how some stadiums are "good for football but not baseball"? Well, Joe Robbie wasn't really good for either one. There are probably more egregious examples of places where the designers should have hit "cancel", but none I've been to personally. Not Gnats park. Not Skydome. Well, may be Exhibition Stadium which I went to as a kid, but that's the only one I can think of. But I digress. Soon after I started noticing the crowd. I mentioned that half of them were wondering where Mantle, Berra and Ford are and the other half seemed to be Brooklyn fans wondering were Robinson, Snider & Hodges were. "Be nice!", my dad said, in an almost perfect imitation of my mom, something he wouldn't have dared in a different setting.

Anyway, we had a fantastic time. Mussina skunked the Marlins. And I'm so damn happy I went because that was the last game I ever saw with him.
