Orioles minors 6/28: Joseph and Worley rehab in Frederick

Two Orioles big leaguers are working their way back to the majors, and it looks like they are almost there.

Norfolk Tides 3, Toledo Mud Hens (DET) 0

The Tides don’t win many games with a score like 3-0, but on this night they got good pitching and just enough offense. Ariel Miranda pitched six solid innings with just three hits and three walks, and relief pitchers Ashur Tolliver and Jason Stoffel pitched the final three without incident.

On offense the Tides only mustered five hits, but they made them count. Audry Perez hit a solo home run and Sharlon Schoop had an RBI triple. The team took advantage of a wild starting pitcher, drawing four walks in the first five innings. Two of them came in to score.

Mike Yastrzemski and Trey Mancini were both hitless on the night, though Mancini did draw a walk.

Harrisburg Senators 13 (WAS), Bowie Baysox 10

It was a wild one in Harrisburg as each team racked up 15 hits but sadly the Baysox also added five errors to the mix.

Baysox starter David Hess had a terrible night, giving up nine runs (eight earned) in just 4.1 innings. Ouch. Relief pitcher Genison Reyes gave up the other four, but thanks to the previously mentioned errors only one was earned.

Chance Sisco hit his first AA home run! It was part of a two-hit night that also had a triple. Let’s keep that up, Chance. Adrian Marin also homered, with three hits and five RBI on the night.

Frederick Keys 7, Carolina Mudcats 0

With the Orioles out on the west coast I decided to take in this game in person. Vance Worley and Caleb Joseph were both making rehab starts and both looked pretty good.

Worley pitched three innings with nine up, nine down. I don’t know how accurate the radar gun was, but his fastball looked about 88. As for Joseph, he reached base three times. In his first at bat he smoked a two-out double that started a four-run rally for the Baysox. He also walked and was hit by a pitch. In his fourth AB he hit a deep fly ball for a sacrifice fly.

Both Worley and Joseph feel they are ready to rejoin the team.

As for the rest of the game, originally slated starter Matthew Grimes pitched five innings in relief. He gave up five hits but no walks and struck out two. Tanner Scott pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the win.

On offense, the night belonged to Conor Bierfeldt. He had three hits in the game and fell a triple short of the cycle. He hit a beautiful dinger in the second inning that sailed over the left field fence.

D.J. Stewart played center field in this game and had a line drive single and a walk to go with a strikeout.

Delmarva and Aberdeen - PPD

Both the Shorebirds and the Ironbirds were rained out last night. Both will be made up with doubleheaders today.
