Orioles minors 6/2: Gallardo's rehab does not go well

Everyone lost on the Orioles farm on Thursday, and even worse, Yovani Gallardo's rehab start had poor results.

Pawtucket (Red Sox) 3, Norfolk Tides 1 (14 innings)

Norfolk had 15 hits in this game, and drew seven walks as a team, and still managed to score only one run! That's hard to do. Over the entire game, they batted 1-for-24 with runners in scoring position. Holy mackerel.

One player who had a good game was Dariel Alvarez, who went 5-6 with two doubles and a walk. Whoa, where did that come from? Potentially interesting prospects Mike Yastrzemski and Trey Mancini each went 2-6 and drew a walk as well. Both of Yaz's hits were for extra bases: a double and a triple. Mancini drove in the lone Tides run, which came in the very first inning.

Even Odrisamer Despaigne got into the act of having a good day, holding the PawSox to a run on five hits and a walk in six innings of work. Despaigne struck out three batters. The next three Tides relievers combined for seven scoreless innings, including four from Scott McGough, before Zach Phillips coughed up two runs in the top of the 14th. So it goes.

Richmond (Giants) 3, Bowie Baysox 0

Only a sixth inning double by Henry Urrutia kept the Baysox from getting no-hit in this game. The #2 Giants prospect, Tyler Beede, spun a gem for the Flying Squirrels, although he only struck out two guys, so other than the near-no-no it wasn't that interesting.

On the pitching side of the ledger, things went a bit better for John Means in his second start after being promoted to Double-A. Means gave up three runs over six innings of work. That came on ten hits, which is a lot, but from the box score we don't know if it was bad BABIP luck, no help from his defense, or some problem with his pitching.

Potomac (Walgreens) 6, Frederick Keys 5 (game 1 - 8 innings)

The most interesting thing about this first game is that it was the first rehab start for Yovani Gallardo. Giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over three innings of work is sub-optimal. He was said to top out at 88 on the stadium gun, though beat writers present offered the excuse that the stadium gun is said to be 4mph slow.

If you believe that, I've got some great beachfront property in Arizona at an affordable price!

Jay Gonzalez hit his first professional home run in nearly a thousand plate appearances, while Jomar Reyes added a 2-4 day.

Potomac (Walgreens) 9, Frederick Keys 2 (game 2 - 7 innings)

This was just your garden variety bad game. Lucas Long gave up six runs on six hits and two walks in only 4.1 innings of work and that was pretty much that.
