Orioles minors 7/12: Keegan Akin makes his Aberdeen debut

Just two games on the docket yesterday and the O’s affiliates picked up a split. Brian Gonzalez had a good start for Delmarva and 2016 draft pick Keegan Akin made his debut in Aberdeen.

Delmarva Shorebirds 7, Columbia Fireflies (NYM) 3

Starting pitcher Brian Gonzalez had a very nice game, pitching six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. All five hits he gave up were singles, and his season ERA is now down to 2.74. Christian Turnipseed pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.

RF Natanael Delgado and CF Cedric Mullins each had three hits in the game, with Deldago hitting a home run. Catcher Alex Murphy also dingered in the game, his only hit. SS Ryan Mountcastle went 0-for-5.

Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 6, Aberdeen Ironbirds 1

Keegan Akin, the O’s 2016 2nd round pick, made his professional debut last night. He started the game and pitched two innings with one run allowed. He didn’t walk any and struck out four. Not a perfect debut, but not bad either.

Rehabbing pitcher Parker Bridwell followed and gave up three runs in three innings, including a home run.

The offense mustered only five hits as the one run they scored in the first inning wasn’t nearly enough to get the job done. Jaylen Ferguson, a 9th round pick in 2015, doubled and walked in the game. Alejandro Juvier, a 15th round pick, also had two hits.
