Saturday Bird Droppings

The Orioles won, Dylan Bundy looked like the pitcher we hoped we'd drafted in 2011, and Joey Rickard is gone for over a month due to his injured thumb. Sorry, gang, I just can't pull off happy endings on weekends, it seems.

About Last Night

Trumbo, Machado HRs back Bundy as Orioles beat Indians 5-1 | fox8.com
Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer, Manny Machado added a solo shot and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 on Friday night to provide rookie Dylan Bundy with his first major league victory as a starter. And most importantly, the win put the O's back in first place in the A.L. East.

Always look for the bright side of life ...

Orioles appear to be on the mend from virus - Baltimore Sun
"We’re gonna maybe be lucky to have as few as we have," Buck Showalter said. "It’s obviously very contagious and moves very quick." He's right. A MLB team is 30+ players and staff in constant close quarters, they got off relatively lightly.

Orioles Place Joey Rickard On DL And Call Up Dariel Alvarez - TKB
Baltimore placed Joey Rickard on its 15-day disabled list after a collision with an outfield wall caused a thumb issue. Dariel Alvarez will take Rickard’s place on the Orioles’ 25-man roster.

Orioles' Buck Showalter, Dan Duquette disappointed but optimistic about Hunter Harvey - Carroll County Times
"We found out that we had to do the surgical route, and as I said, we could have found that out sooner or we could have decided together," Dan Duquette said. "Ultimately, it’s Hunter’s decision. But given his age, he should be able to resume his career." Well, there's a cheery prognosis. What was the alternative, take him out behind the shed? Send him to Grandpa's farm upstate?

If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old

Baltimore Orioles' Dylan Bundy only part of solution for rotation - Baltimore Orioles- ESPN
As the Orioles look to add to their rotation, it appears that Dylan Bundy will continue to get starts. And he's getting comfortable with the big club - he gave members of the bullpen customized shirts with favorite phrase from his favorite country song. C'mon, you didn't think Dylan Bundy listened to Swedish house music, did you?

As Orioles search for starting pitchers, Odrisamer Despaigne continues to impress out of bullpen - Baltimore Sun
I do believe the time-proven mathematical equation "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind regarding the current use of Despaigne's pitching talents.

Orioles' Duquette on deadline intentions: 'We're going to try to add to our rotation' - Baltimore Sun
"We're going to try to add to our rotation," Duquette said. "We need some more consistency from the guys we have here, and we're going to try to add to it by the trade route. … This is a really thin market. There's a lot of teams chasing a few pitchers. It's about as thin as I've ever seen the market, but we're going to see what we can do." In the immortal words of blog overlord Mark Brown, "Probably nothing will happen, until it does."

And Finally...

Undefeated Orioles win minors title tilt | Logan Hj | news.hjnews.com
It is the established editorial policy of this blog to celebrate the success of all Orioles teams, no matter the sport and age. The Smithfield (UT) Orioles finished their 9-10 season undefeated, and there's the cutest photo of one of the players fielding a ball in O's gear you'll see today.

Birthdays and History

There are no former or current Orioles players celebrating a birthday today. Odd. It is the birthday of famous people like Haile Selassie (1892), emperor of Ethiopia; Calvert DeForest (1921), comedian (Larry "Bud" Melman); Woody Harrelson (1961), American actor; Slash (1965), [Saul Hudson], rock guitarist & songwriter; Stephanie Seymour (1968), model; 1968 Nick Menza (1968), American drummer (Megadeth); Alison Krauss (1971), country singer; Marlon Wayans (1972), comedian; Omar Epps (1973), American actor; Daniel Radcliffe (1989), actor.

On this day in Baltimore baseball history...

1971 - Pat Dobson wins his 10th straight for the Orioles, beating California, 4 - 3.
1998 - Baltimore C Lenny Webster's four hits - including a double and homer - and six RBI power the Orioles to a 9 - 7 win over Oakland.
2013 - The Orioles acquire veteran reliever Francisco Rodriguez from the Brewers for infield prospect Nick Delmonico. Well, that didn't work out well for either team, did it?
