Orioles minors 7/7: Everyone loses except for Rookie league

Not much to get excited about among the Orioles affiliates on Thursday night, although some players, like Ryan Mountcastle, had good nights.

Syracuse (Walgreens) 8, Norfolk Tides 0

The originally-scheduled Tides starter for this game, Mike Wright, appears to have been summoned to start Friday’s game for the Orioles. That left an emergency spot start for Nick Additon, who really added to his ERA by giving up four runs in five innings. Things didn’t go much better for Zach Phillips who gave up four runs in one inning.

Although the Tides picked up seven hits, they didn’t manage to get any extra base hits at all and they went 0-7 with runners in scoring position. That’s how you lose a game.

Wayward Team Steve member Steve Lombardozzi went 3-4 for the Chiefs.

Trenton (Yankees) 2, Bowie Baysox 1

Another game where there were real problems with runners in scoring position, as the Baysox only went 1-11 with RISP in the game. Chance Sisco did not play in the game, so as far as hitting prospects there’s nothing to talk about there.

Brandon Barker, one of the pitchers who came back in the Brian Matusz salary dump, started for Bowie. Barker allowed six hits and two walks in 5.1 innings of work, including a solo home run. Barker has a 3.20 ERA since joining the Orioles organization.

Lynchburg (Indians) 4, Frederick Keys 3

The theme continues: The Keys did not hit well with runners in scoring position. They equaled the Hillcats hit total with nine but were only 1-9 with RISP. Last year’s first rounder, D.J. Stewart, was 1-4 and drew a walk. Since being promoted to Frederick, Stewart is batting .268 and has posted a .729 OPS. That’s better than he was doing in Delmarva. Small sample size, of course.

The dude Jonah Heim went 2-4 in the game and hit his sixth home run of the season.

Hagerstown (Walgreens) 16, Delmarva Shorebirds 5

Well, this is, uh... not so good. If you can believe it, the Shorebirds actually out-hit the Suns in this game, 16-15, but the scoreboard certainly didn’t reflect that. It was a bad day at the office for Michael Costello, who gave up thirteen runs, twelve earned, in 4.1 innings of work. Ouch.

One bit of good news is that Ryan Mountcastle, last year’s other first rounder, went 3-5 and is now batting .300 for the Shorebirds. It’s good to see actual prospects doing good things!

Aberdeen IronBirds - OFF

GCL Orioles 13, GCL Red Sox 1

I don’t usually mention the GCL here, but hey, Aberdeen was off and these guys kicked the butts of the Red Sox affiliate when everybody else lost, so good job, Rookie league!

Of interest here is continuing early success in the US for Gui Yuan “Itchy” Xu, the Orioles Chinese signing from last year. At 20, Xu is old for the GCL so he’s probably only down there to get acclimated to America, but hey, he can only play in the games they have him play. Xu went 3-5 with a double. Best of luck to him as he keeps going.
