Wednesday Bird Droppings: Where we’re 99 days from Opening Day

Manny Machado is still an Oriole, and should Todd Frazier become one?

MLB: Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

It’s hump day, Camden Chatters! Have any of you already taken off work for the holidays? Or will that be next week? I won’t be taking any time off because I live in a country that doesn’t provide paid maternity leave. But this is a baseball blog, so let’s talk that instead.

We are now 99 days from Opening Day. You may remember Mark saying that yesterday was 99 days from Opening Day, but it turns out that counting is hard and we’ve been one day off this entire offseason. You’ll forgive us, right?

Manny Machado remains an Oriole for now. Depending on who you listen to, he might be going to the Diamondbacks or the White Sox, or maybe he won’t go anywhere at all because Peter Angelos can’t make a decision. Which of those things are true? Nobody knows. That’s why we just keep waiting.

With or Without Manny, Orioles Should Sign Todd Frazier - Camden Depot
Whaddya think about bringing The Toddfather on to play for the Orioles?

What's the precedent for a Machado deal? Looking at MLB trades in the past decade that involved a young superstar before his walk year - BaltimoreBaseball.com
Players like Machado don't get traded very often. Here is a good breakdown of similar players traded in similar situations. Does this make you feel better or worse about a Machado trade?

Taking a closer look at pitcher Nestor Cortes - Birds Watcher
Mark already gave you the profile on Nestor Cortes, but here is a bit more detail including video.

Oakland Athletics acquire Jake Bray, Jonah Heim to complete Jaycob Brugman, Joey Wendle deals — OaklandClubhouse
Does anyone remember the Orioles trading for Jaycob Brugman? No, me neither. But the deal is now complete.

Why the Chicago Cubs should trade for Manny Machado - Brinkwire
From a Cubs perspective, here is someone who wants to trade Addison Russell for Machado. Wasn't he accused of domestic violence? Pass.

What's the worst sports jersey you've ever owned? - The Comeback
This isn't Orioles related, but perhaps a fun question for the offseason. I don't personally have jerseys. I am short, they look stupid on me. But the worst player t-shirt I ever had has to be Sidney Ponson. How about you?

Marlins Man faced off with Derek Jeter at a Marlins town hall and it was WILD - SBNation.com
There was a town hall for Marlins season ticket holders yesterday and the tweets made it sound ridiculous. We live in a world where Marlins Man asks Derek Jeter, "Do you know who I am?"

Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have just one Orioles birthday buddy, Mr. Aubrey Huff. Huff was signed to a three-year contract with the Orioles ahead of the 2007 season in a deal that the front office made way too big a deal out of. Most recently he is known for being kind of nuts on Twitter. He turns 41 years old today.

On this day in 1995 the Orioles signed B.J. Surhoff to a three-year contract. In 2000 they re-signed Mike Bordick after trading him to the Mets at the previous trade deadline. And in 2014 Troy Patton was suspended 25 games for testing positive for amphetamines. I don’t really miss him.

Finally, the Orioles released a Christmas video starring Trey Mancini and Tim Beckham. I know many of us are not feeling very charitable towards the Orioles at this moment in time, but it’s pretty adorable and reminded me that I do still like our guys.
