Orioles Opening Day roster is officially set

The Orioles made their 25-man roster official on Sunday. It’s not locked in for long.

The Orioles made it clear who was going to be on their Opening Day roster a couple of days ago, but it took until Sunday for them to officially announce all of the moves to set their 25-man roster for the start of the season.

In true Orioles fashion, the roster from Opening Day is not going to last for long. Wade Miley is officially on the disabled list to start the season, retroactive to March 30. Unless something unexpected happens, he will be activated to make the start on April 9.

The official set of roster moves to lock in the 25-man roster, for now:

  • Placed on the 10-day disabled list: Chris Tillman (right shoulder bursitis), Miley (upper respiratory infection), Anthony Santander (right forearm strain)
  • Optioned to Triple-A Norfolk: Jayson Aquino, Gabriel Ynoa
  • Contract selected: Craig Gentry
  • Returned to the Red Sox: Aneury Tavarez

Which sets up a frankly weird Opening Day roster where the Orioles will have eleven pitchers - but only three starting pitchers - and fourteen position players. That’s an eight-man bullpen and a five-man bench.

Pitchers

  • RHP Brad Brach
  • LHP Zach Britton
  • RHP Dylan Bundy
  • RHP Oliver Drake
  • RHP Kevin Gausman
  • RHP Mychal Givens
  • LHP Donnie Hart
  • RHP Ubaldo Jimenez
  • LHP Vidal Nuno
  • RHP Darren O’Day
  • RHP Tyler Wilson

Catchers

  • Welington Castillo
  • Caleb Joseph

Infielders

  • Chris Davis
  • Ryan Flaherty
  • J.J. Hardy
  • Manny Machado
  • Jonathan Schoop

Outfielders

  • Craig Gentry
  • Adam Jones
  • Hyun Soo Kim
  • Trey Mancini
  • Joey Rickard
  • Seth Smith
  • Mark Trumbo

Does that look like a roster that’s going back to the playoffs? If it doesn’t, the good news is that here’s going to be at least two moves within two weeks. Tillman will be back by mid-May at the latest, if all keeps progressing as possible. Hopefully the Orioles are headed for another season where they surprise everybody.
