Enter the spoiled whiners with funny accents. Yes, it's the first of the annual invasions of the Boston fans, some of whom are probably riding up from Northern Virginia, possibly even exchanging their Walgreens hats for a weekend. May they go home unhappy.
It's up to the Orioles to ensure that outcome. Whether they will be able to do so is another story. They will face a dreaded lefty, Drew Pomeranz, in their attempt tonight. That's not to say that Pomeranz himself is dreaded, because of course he's not, but he is a lefty and the Orioles perform against lefties in such a way that they should all be dreaded. So far, they're 10th in the AL in OPS against lefties this season.
That sucks. So did the Orioles the last time they faced Pomeranz earlier this season. Maybe things will go better at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. I won't be holding my breath. The Orioles inexplicably stinking against left-handed pitching has been a constant for the past several seasons. Some of those seasons have even been winning seasons and still they were no good against southpaws.
The Orioles have changed hitting coaches, changed some players, and even this season attempted to arrange the roster such that they could run a platoon with both outfield corner spots in hopes of hitting better against lefties. Still no luck. Not that they did very well against righties Bronson Arroyo or Scott Feldman in the recent Cincinnati series - yet at least they won two out of three, somehow. Please start hitting well, team.
