Norfolk Tides - off
Bowie Baysox - off
Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 10, Frederick Keys 7
When you give up 17 hits to the other team, you’re probably going to lose, and that’s what happened to Frederick on Monday. The Pelicans just poured it on. They also drew six walks. Starting pitcher Brian Gonzalez had the toughest game, giving up five runs on ten hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work. Things didn’t get much better after that.
Not everything was bad for the Keys. Rehabbing big leaguer Chris Davis got through a game without incident, going 1-4 with two strikeouts. He also drew a walk. Shortstop Ryan Mountcastle was 3-5 on the day with a pair of doubles and is now batting .312/.341/.546 for the season. It’s exciting following his progress this season.
Hickory (Rangers) 2, Delmarva Shorebirds 1
Kind of the other side of the same coin as the above, you’re not going to win very many games when you get only five hits. That’s what happened to the Shorebirds on Monday, although they only gave up three hits themselves and still managed to lose the game.
Good news is that starting pitcher Alex Wells blanked the Crawdads for six innings, allowing just two hits, no walks, and picking up four strikeouts. Wells is now sitting on a 2.72 ERA for the season.
Aberdeen IronBirds - off
Not much action on the farm with three teams off, so let’s check in on one of the lower affiliates.
GCL Twins 13, GCL Orioles 1
On second thought, let’s not.
