Tuesday night Orioles game thread: vs. Rays, 7:10

New, comments

The Orioles put their 8% chance of making the playoffs into Wade Miley's hands tonight. He'll pitch opposite Jacob Faria of the Rays.

With the trade deadline just six days away, and with the Orioles having only five games to play until that deadline arrives, every game is going to take on an outsized importance. Although the temptation to sell must certainly be strong, the O's are close in that picture. If they creep closer by the deadline day, it'll be even harder to go ahead and sell.

Can they actually creep closer? I mean, we're talking a full turn through the Orioles starting rotation. You know, the one that's the worst in the American League. That includes Wade Miley and his 5.56 ERA and his 1.820 WHIP pitching tonight. He also gives up home runs like they're going out of style.

Chris Davis is out of the lineup for a second consecutive night. He's said to be battling a viral infection in his stomach. That's not fun for anybody. Neither is how Davis is hitting so far this year, so a night with Trey Mancini at first base and Mark Trumbo in as the DH rather than in the outfield actually sounds pretty good for the O's. Miley will certainly be giving up balls in the air. Maybe someone can run one down.

If you are a pie-in-the-sky optimist who would like to keep an eye on the out of town scoreboard as if the O's will end up winning enough games for this to matter, here are a few games to follow:

  • Reds at Yankees, 7:05
  • Royals at Tigers, 7:10
  • Angels at Indians, 7:10
  • Marlins at Rangers, 8:05
  • Twins at Dodgers, 10:10
  • Red Sox at Mariners, 10:10

Those make up the six teams, along with the Rays, who are either tied with or ahead of the Orioles in the present wild card standings. Again, it won't really matter if the O's don't win, but if they do, it's worth keeping in mind.
