Tuesday night Orioles game thread: vs. Athletics, 7:05

The Orioles haven’t won two games in a row since concluding a sweep on August 2. Maybe Ubaldo Jimenez can help them change that against the Athletics tonight.

At this point, there’s not much that’s new to say about the 2017 Orioles on a daily basis. Who they are today is still who they were yesterday and who they were last month and the month before that too. Only a lengthy winning streak that they may not be capable of pulling off could change that in any meaningful way.

Still, here they are. Going into today, where they sit 3.5 games back of a wild card spot with five teams to pass, their chances of making it into the postseason, according to Fangraphs, are 2.8%. If they win again today then those chances will be improved; sweep the Athletics and they will improve further. Can they do those things? It seems likely not.

It’s Ubaldo Jimenez on the mound tonight for the O’s. That has been a periodic blessing but far more often a curse. The biggest problem facing the Orioles is that they have to win 60% of their remaining games, approximately, and their starting rotation includes all of Jimenez, Wade Miley, and Jeremy Hellickson, as well as, occasionally, Chris Tillman.

That’s a dire situation that the Orioles face, which is fitting on the half-hearted Game of Thrones night promotion going on at Camden Yards tonight, because it’s remarkably like (spoiler removed) getting into a bad situation in (spoiler removed) and needing to be saved by (spoiler removed) in (spoiler removed) episode.

(spoiler removed) may have been able to be saved by (spoiler removed) - but I don’t think the Orioles are going to find the real life equivalent to (spoiler removed) waiting to (spoiler removed) in order to help them.
