Friday night Orioles game thread: vs. Blue Jays, 7:05

New, comments

The Orioles flushed away a chance to keep pace in a Thursday loss. Now they need to make it up on Friday night against the Blue Jays.

The Orioles won seven games in a row before last night and somehow managed to lose a game that neatly erased most, if not all, of the good feelings generated by that season-high winning streak. Losing a game like THAT to the last place Blue Jays simply isn’t something a team that is contending can afford to do at this point in the season.

They get another shot at the Jays on Friday night. A better pitcher will be taking the mound for the O’s tonight. Kevin Gausman has been living up to the hopes we had for him a bit better in the second half of the season. Over nine starts since the break, Gausman has a 3.45 ERA. That’s good, though he’s also given up 12 homers in 54.2 innings over those games, which is kind of, uh, ridiculous.

Like they did yesterday, the Orioles will be facing a Jays pitcher with a 5+ ERA. Tonight, it’s Joe Biagini, who has split time between their rotation and bullpen. He hasn’t been good. This is another guy the Orioles need to destroy. They delivered on that part of the bargain against Marco Estrada last night, of course. It was the pitching that fell apart.

In the wild card race, the O’s are now 2.5 games back of the Twins. Root for Royals and Rangers victories tonight to help the O’s gain ground on the Twins and Angels - but it’s up to the O’s to win in order for it to matter whether or not the Twins and Angels win.
