Unless something very weird and wholly unwelcome happens, this is really it. This is the last time we will have to watch Wade Miley pitch in an Orioles uniform. The season may be a complete lost cause and failure, but at least we can start to take solace as it draws to its conclusion that some things will be over for good. In this year’s case, that’s a good thing.
The only thing that’s saving Miley from being the MLB-worst pitcher with qualified innings (one per team game) in the WHIP category is the fact that he’s stunk so much that he hasn’t pitched enough innings. This will be the guy’s 31st start and he’s only thrown 153.1 innings. He hasn’t even averaged five innings per start this year! Many have been brutal starts to watch.
Only an 8.2 inning start or a complete game would get Miley back at the top of that leaderboard where he belongs. I won’t be holding my breath. But he’s the worst among pitchers with 150+ IP, which is still astounding.
Draft pick watch: The Orioles currently hold the 12th pick in next year’s draft. They could end up as high as 9th if they lose all of the games this weekend and other things happen. If the O’s themselves sweep, it’s possible they could get as low as 18th. I would like to see the O’s win, even though they can’t have a winning season. But as long as there’s a consolation prize for losing, we might as well be aware of it.
Play the kids alert for tonight’s game: Austin Hays and Anthony Santander are in the starting lineup. Tim Beckham is not a kid, but he’s back in the lineup. Adam Jones is not. Mark Trumbo is not. Chris Davis is hitting cleanup for some reason.
