The Orioles are playing the Indians tonight and I don’t really like their chances. I can’t quite put my finger on why... oh, right, maybe it’s the fact that the MLB leader in WHIP, Wade Miley, is going to go headlong into an Indians team that has won 15 straight games.
There have been more than a few games this season where you probably could have counted out the Orioles before it even began and they went ahead and won those games anyway. Some of them were even ones where you could count them out after the game started and they still won. This happened as recently as Tuesday’s game against the Yankees.
The O’s are going to need to pull off more of those unexpected wins over the course of this weekend if they want to keep pace or gain ground in the AL wild card race. They’re now two games behind the Twins for the second wild card spot. They’re also a game behind the Angels.
The Twins play the Royals this weekend, while the Angels play the Mariners. So they’re facing wild card fringe teams, whereas the O’s get the Indians buzzsaw that has not lost a game since August 23. That’s just ridiculous. Maybe they’re due to lose a couple of games after all that winning. Even the best teams lose some games. Heck, the team with the best record in MLB, the Dodgers, have lost seven in a row and nine out of ten.
