World Series Game 1 open thread

There seems to be a media narrative that Manny Machado is the villain of the World Series. This ignores the fact that the Red Sox are villains of the universe. Anyway, Game 1 is tonight.

There is something unexciting about the #1 and #3 payroll teams meeting up in the World Series. There is no underdog story here to root for, no interesting angle of a team that’s “not supposed to be here” getting its chance to maybe fluke its way into a title. There is only big market money.

Obviously, all people who have high moral character must root for the Dodgers by virtue of their being “not the Red Sox,” but it’s still not as fun as if there were anything really interesting to root for there. It’s like, whatever. Yeah, they do some weird stuff with how they will play a number of players anywhere on the diamond and somehow this works out and that’s neat.

But also, I don’t care about the Dodgers at all. If they win, good for them. If they lose, I will not feel bad for them. I will only feel bad for those of us who must live in the world where the Red Sox have four World Series titles this century. The series starts tonight on Fox.

Lineup for the visiting Dodgers:

  1. Brian Dozier - 2B
  2. Justin Turner - 3B
  3. David Freeze - 1B
  4. Manny Machado - SS
  5. Chris Taylor - LF
  6. Matt Kemp - DH
  7. Enrique Hernandez - CF
  8. Yasiel Puig - RF
  9. Austin Barnes - C

This is an all-right-handed lineup against Red Sox starter Chris Sale. It’s Clayton Kershaw taking the mound for the Dodgers. These are the Red Sox who will face him:

  1. Mookie Betts - RF
  2. Andrew Benintendi - LF
  3. Steve Pearce - 1B
  4. J.D. Martinez - DH
  5. Xander Bogaerts - SS
  6. Rafael Devers - 3B
  7. Ian Kinsler - 2B
  8. Sandy Leon - C
  9. Jackie Bradley Jr. - CF
