World Series Game 4 open thread

It took 18 innings last night, but the Dodgers finally won a game in the World Series. They now trail the Red Sox, 2-1, with a chance to tie the series up tonight.

One of the things that makes baseball fun is how sometimes the schedule can be completely pitiless. The Red Sox and the Dodgers just played the longest World Series game that has ever been played last night and here they are back at it tonight, with even greater stakes: The Dodgers could tie the series with a win and the Red Sox once again could put themselves on the cusp of a championship with a win of their own.

Eighteen innings of baseball last night means that things could get weird either today or tomorrow with a pitching staff. The Red Sox Game 4 starter is former Orioles farmhand Eduardo Rodriguez, who actually pitched in last night’s game, though he only faced one batter, so that probably shouldn’t throw him off too much.

Both teams could be hoping to ride their starting pitchers a bit longer than has been done throughout these playoffs. Or not. You never know.

The starting lineup for the home team Dodgers:

  1. David Freese - 1B
  2. Max Muncy - 2B
  3. Justin Turner - 3B
  4. Manny Machado - SS
  5. Cody Bellinger - CF
  6. Yasiel Puig - RF
  7. Chris Taylor - LF
  8. Austin Barnes - C
  9. Rich Hill - P

One of the other Dodgers referred to Hill in a post-game interview last night as “Dick Mountain,” which I just find delightful. It remains bizarre that Hill, who was horrible for the 2009 Orioles, has gone on to be a quality pitcher for the last three seasons and is now pitching in a World Series at age 38.

And for the Red Sox:

  1. Mookie Betts - CF
  2. Andrew Benintendi - LF
  3. Steve Pearce - 1B
  4. J.D. Martinez - RF
  5. Xander Bogaerts - SS
  6. Eduardo Nunez - 3B
  7. Brock Holt - 2B
  8. Christian Vazquez - C
  9. Eduardo Rodriguez - P
