Thursday night game thread: vs. Rays, 7:05

The Orioles are bad right now. But Dylan Bundy is good! Will he be able to save this sinking ship for a day?

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Orioles have a chance to make dubious history tonight, friends.

If the Orioles (6-18) lose tonight, they'll officially be off to the second-worst 25-game start in team history, bested only by the infamous 1988 team that lost its first 21 games. That is not a place you want to be.

If the Orioles squeak out a win, they'll still be tied for the second-worst start with the dreadful 2010 Orioles, who began 7-18. That is also not a place you want to be.

But, alas, here the Orioles are. They're 12 games under .500 and already 12.5 games out of first place. This in Birdland.

The good news is that staff ace Dylan Bundy is pitching tonight. For Bundy, we can actually use the term "staff ace" seriously, and not sarcastically like we've done for previous overmatched O's No. 1 starters. Bundy has a 1.42 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Four of his five outings have been quality starts.

That said, a Bundy start is by no means a likely win. The Orioles have somehow managed to lose three of his five starts, thanks to a dreadful offense that hasn't scored more than three runs in any of his outings.

Will the Orioles' bats break through against Chris Archer tonight? Stranger things have happened. Usually, though, the expected thing happens. So probably not.
