Saturday afternoon Orioles game thread: at Yankees, 1:05

The Orioles and Yankees played a 5.5 hour game that ended after midnight. Later the same day, here they are again! Maybe Chris Tillman will look better in this start.

Not much more than 12 hours after the conclusion of a 14-inning contest on Friday night, the Orioles and the Yankees are back at it again on Saturday afternoon. When people talk about professional baseball being a grind unlike any other sport, one of the things they are talking about is scenarios like this.

There's a slightly different look to the roster for both teams. The Yankees had to place two players - CC Sabathia and Brandon Drury - on the disabled list before the game. Both were removed due to injuries mid-game last night. They also optioned reliever Jonathan Holder, last seen surrendering the dramatic grand slam to Pedro Alvarez.

The Orioles have made only one move, bringing up reliever Jimmy Yacabonis to reinforce a bullpen that was used heavily last night. In a bit of a surprise, the corresponding move for Yacabonis is not sending down a reliever, but rather placing outfielder Colby Rasmus on the disabled list with a left hip flexor strain. If Rasmus has not been healthy, that would certainly explain why he has looked so bad in the early season action. This is not the first hip injury of his career.

If Chris Tillman once again looks like 2017 Tillman, as he did in his first start in Houston - even if he refused to acknowledge it afterwards - then Yacabonis will almost certainly be needed today, along with Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr., who didn't pitch in last night's game.

If the O's can manage to get through the game with just those three pitchers - probably in a blowout loss in that scenario, let's be honest - then the bullpen can probably reset itself and we just have to worry about the futility of a short bench. Not that Rasmus being on the bench was helping that futility anyway.
