Sunday afternoon Orioles game thread: at Yankees, 1:05

The Orioles have guaranteed at least a split in this series against the Yankees, which is nice, but a Sunday afternoon victory to make it a series win would be nicer.

Whatever happens today in the Bronx, the Orioles will at least leave New York with no less than a series split against the Yankees. That is surely better than you might have thought would happen before this series even began. On the other hand, if they lose today and get that split, they will still be just 3-7 on the year, still left with the impression that they can't beat the good teams, which has been the case for the past two seasons.

Though we heard early on about how the state of the Orioles bullpen would keep them from the kind of daily roster moves that have characterized the Dan Duquette years, they've still managed to do it this weekend. Jimmy Yacabonis, who appeared yesterday, is already riding back down to Triple-A, with Tanner Scott summoned to take his place. If Scott is needed, it probably doesn't mean anything good for the state of this particular Orioles game, but they do need to get through innings and it's better if the good relievers don't have to pitch garbage innings.

Although Mike Wright Jr. had a nice first start against the Astros, I have to admit that I don't have a ton of confidence in his ability to pitch well against the Yankees, so it seems likely that there may be some garbage time innings to get through in this afternoon's contest. Maybe he will surprise me. That would be nice! The Orioles could use some positive surprises in the starting rotation.

Chris Davis is out of the lineup today due to an illness of some kind. That probably means "he could pinch hit in an emergency" and that he actually couldn't pinch hit in an emergency. Get well soon, because the Orioles are already playing with a short bench. If Davis is unavailable, their only position player reserves today are Pedro Alvarez and Chance Sisco.
