The Orioles dropped the series opener against the Red Sox on Thursday night by a score of 6-2. David Price was dominant for Boston, throwing nine innings and allowing only two runs on five hits with zero walks and eight strikeouts. Manny Machado was one of the few bright spots, hitting a two run home run in the ninth to eliminate the chance of a shutout. Kevin Gausman took the loss for the Orioles, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings and giving up a worrisome five stolen bases.
The birds will look to get back on track tonight against left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who is 1-1 on the year with a 5.47 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. In his career against the Orioles, Pomeranz is 2-3 with a 3.34 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 29.2 innings. Trey Mancini is hitting .333 in nine career at-bats against Pomeranz. But several other Orioles have less than stellar career numbers against the big left-hander. Manny Machado is hitting .214 in 14 career at-bats with one home run, Chris Davis is hitting .214 in 14 at-bats and Adam Jones is hitting .188 in 16 at-bats.
Alex Cobb will take the mound for the Orioles, and he will try to do better than the last time he pitched at Fenway Park. That was his first start of the year, when he gave up seven earned runs in 3.2 innings. In his career at Fenway Park, Cobb is 5-2 with a 4.33 ERA. J.D. Martinez is hitting .600 lifetime against Cobb with one home run and two RBI. Mookie Betts is hitting .286 in 21 career at-bats with one home run and four RBI, and Hanley Ramirez is batting .444 in nine at-bats with one home run and three RBI.
The Orioles are loading their lineup with right-handed hitters tonight to combat the left-hander for Boston. Hopefully tonight is the night they break their 13 game road losing streak.
