"Time will not dim the glory of their deeds." So reads the inscription from Baltimore's old Memorial Stadium, now preserved outside of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Today we remember those who went off to fight in America's wars and did not make it back home.
Baseball isn't so important compared to that. Teams will have special uniforms and caps to commemorate the day.
Whether the Orioles win or lose today doesn't matter in that grand scheme. It doesn't even matter in the context of the 2018 baseball season because, at 17-36, their season is already effectively over. But for fans of the Orioles it would be nice to beat the neighbors to the south. Maybe they will find a way to do it.
Chris Davis is out of the lineup to begin the game, with Washington lefty Gio Gonzalez on the mound. Perhaps the outfield defense will be a little bit less horrible with Joey Rickard and Craig Gentry out there. Maybe Alex Cobb won't give up a zillion home runs, so it will actually matter who is in the outfield. I don't know. It hasn't been much fun to watch the Orioles since Opening Day.
