Thursday night game thread: vs. Yankees, 7:05

In what appears to be a lopsided match-up, the Orioles welcome the second-place Yankees into Camden Yards to open a four-game series.

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The Yankees are 35-17. The Orioles are 17-39. This doesn't look good on paper. But that's why they play the game, right? The last time these two teams met, the O's won three out of four in New York in a series that included some exciting late-game heroics. Let's hope we see more of that tonight against a New York club that is riding young talent to a very nice 2018 campaign.

Some good news came on injured players today. We learned that Zach Britton will pitch again on Saturday after last night's successful rehab appearance with the Keys. Darren O'Day is feeling much better and plans to make a rehab appearance soon. Colby Rasmus will report to AA Bowie tomorrow for a rehab assignment. You can decide if the last one is good news or not.

Looking at tonight, if the Orioles remember how to score runs, this one has the makings of a high-scoring affair. Yankees' starter Sonny Gray is giving up nearly six runs per game and Andrew Cashner (5.07 ERA) hasn't exactly been a mystery this season.

Manager Buck Showalter continues to tinker with his lineup while searching for that magical combination. What would you have said if I told you on Opening Day that Jace Peterson would be batting leadoff on May 31? Trey Mancini is again hitting further down in the lineup as his struggles continue. Mark Trumbo, who has been hitting for a high average without much power over the past couple weeks, is occupying the cleanup spot while Jonathan Schoop moves down to the five hole. Chris Davis is hitting sixth, which probably isn't low enough for most fans reading this.

While there's a figurative cloud hanging over Camden Yards this season, there literally is one tonight. The weather forecast is calling for rain throughout the evening.
