There are a plethora of reasons why the Orioles are the only team in the league without at least 20 wins. Chris Davis's well-documented struggles, and the Orioles lack of a true leadoff hitter are both on that list. The Orioles will attempt to address both of those problems by starting Corban Joseph atop the order in his Orioles debut tonight against the Marlins.
Mark posted a nice write-up on Joseph's promotion and the Orioles roster moves earlier today. The 29-year-old will get the nod at first base, while Davis takes a seat. Joseph's minor league success has been well documented in the Camden Chat minor league reports this season, and the Orioles hope some of his offensive production will carry over into the Majors.
Pedro Alvarez will start at DH and Danny Valencia will play third base. Trey Mancini and Mark Trumbo will patrol the corners, and Adam Jones will play center per usual. The Orioles will not be breaking any track records in the outfield tonight.
Kevin Gausman will start against a Miami team that is second to last in the Majors in runs scored this season. You can probably figure out which team is at the bottom of that list. Gausman (3-5) hasn't won in over a month, but he'll have a great opportunity to pick one up tonight.
The Marlins will attempt to bounce back from a 16-inning loss to the Giants yesterday. Jose Urena (1-8) will try and eat some innings for a Miami team that will not want to go to the bullpen early in the game.
Both teams have struggled all year, but someone has to win this game. Let's hope it's the O's!
